Stipulated minimum size in competition stones.

I have noticed on both here and overseas forums that the +/- 0.1 value added to the stipulated minimum size on IFC competition stones is confusing people.

It does not need to be there, the minimum size for example is 10.0mm, everyone will understand that it has to be no smaller than 10mm.

Hi Frank,  it actually needs to say minimum 10mm with a 0.1mm tolerence.  The tollerence is to accomodate measurement variations between the competitor's calipers and the judges.

Nylon digital calipers measure in increments of 0.1mm.  Meaning a stone may measure 10.0 on one set of calipers and 9.9 on another.

The $20 set I purchased states they are accurate to +/- 0.2mm.

    Regards

There is a fairly simple solution, just drop the word minimum.

Dropping the word minimum would not solve the problem, because you would then have a specified size of 10mm. What they are saying is that you will not be penalised if you are less than 0.1mm under. The incorrect bit is referring to +/-, when it is only - that matters.
