I have been looking at some designs in the 2019 comp and one is calling for a material synthetic quartz hat is the common name for this material before I go and throw a lump of CZ on the dop

It will have to be synthetic quartz only, there are a few suppliers in OZ.

The answer to your question is Hydrothermal Quartz.
There was also some cobolt blue quartz on the market that crystallised from the flux in a steel mill. It was cut and polished as hexagonal obelisks but I haven't seen any at gem shows for a while.

Hi Ed,
I couldn't find the site on the website, but can see the confusion as Any Coloured Cubic Zirconia is listed in the diagram for section I.10.3 but Any Coloured Quartz listed in the Show Schedule for that section. Of course this would allow for both natural and synthetic Quartz.
However N.10.3 is listed as Any Colour Synthetic Quartz in the show schedule.

I think that all the conversations on this topic have referred to the 2019 AFG Competition - not other Competitions!

Guys, on the Website "Home" page,on the right hand side of the screen, scroll down a bit, under AFG 2019 Competition, the change to the schedule is stated there.
The fact still remains that the schedule still calls for synthetic quartz in the novice section referred to. Why not just quartz?
It's probably too late to change that now. But if you are looking for mm quartz, Lucy who sells at the SE Qld gemshows has hydrothermal quartz in a variety of colours.
I would go for the lighter colours. The Amythest coloured synth quartz I bought a few years ago was so saturated it reflected badly. I am ready to throw the rest out.
I' ve seen some stones cut from the orange that looked ok.

I do not cut synthetics normally (one recent exception was a 4ct Biron emerald). I certainly would not be cutting this one since I have been Open class for more than 30 years, although it is a long time since I cut for other than aesthetic appeal competitions. One of the main reasons for dropping out of comp cutting was the prevalence of synthetics - you put a lot of time into a stone and end up with a pretty, but worthless result.
