Spirit Burner Wicks

    Hi guys,

Just a question about the spirit burner wicks. I bought a spirit burner from a jewellery supply store about a year ago and it came with a wick. I have had trouble with this particular wick, i.e.  doesn't want to light up and when it does eventually burns off the cotton real quick and in turn I have to adjust the length of the wick to get enough flame to finish off dopping. I do let the wick soak up first, its certainly not dry. I also cut off the burnt end and try again, but to no avail.

Question: Can anybody please let me know where I can buy a longer lasting wick?  Who supplies them?

I have a small amount of wick left thats in my old bottle of about 25 years ago and that works a treat. Not much left of it though. It is of a tight weave make and not such a loose weave as the one supplied with the new burner. I heard that this old wick may have some glass fibre weaved in it. It sure lasts a long time. Id like to buy this type of wick.

    Thank You

    Paul

Gooday Paul, John Broadfoot and I did a faceting course at Emerald a few weeks ago with 10 students and we had the same problem with two new metho burners. The wicks burnt away by the second day. One of the students had an old burner and it lasted the whole week thank goodness. You could contact Gem Hunters Haven at Glen Innes 0488181758 they did sell them. Also Gem Cuts at Ballina 1800112247.

Paul I went to Spot light last week and found a few different size and types  of cord in the blind section and in the ribbon section. Some is bought by the metre and others are made up in packets. I got a couple of different types. The black blind cord has a white center 5 metres for $5.00. 5mm thick. The black part is mostly polyester and leaves a plastic type cover over the wick.

The white cord from the ribbon section seemed to be the best and burnt similar to the old wicks we used to get in the olden days. this one you get by the metre. 4.8mm $2.27 per metre.
